Players looking for a great online game to enjoy will want to learn all about playing Jacks or Better. This is one of the more popular types of video poker due to the fun it provides its players with. Another thing players will be glad to know is the game of Jacks or Better is easy for them to learn. Before a player jumps right on to the video poker machine, they should start by familiarizing themselves with the actual game of Jacks or Better.

When players are enjoying the game of video poker, it will just be them and the machine, no other players are involved. This is one thing many people like about it, this makes it less pressure. Players need to begin by choosing a good online casino to play at. They want to select one with a good payout percentage and run on reliable software. Once they are registered and have the software downloaded onto their computer, they can begin playing Jacks or Better video poker.

Playing Jacks or Better

jacks-or-better-video-pokerWhen it comes to enjoying the game of Jacks or Better video poker at an online casino, player’s obviously want to play it in a way that will yield the best results. This is why players should always try to play the maximum amount. BY betting the maximum a player will know they are going to win the highest payout should they get a royal flush on the Jacks or Better video poker game. When players have chosen the game they will want to click on that max bet button. Their hand will then appear on the screen. Players will then take a good look at the cards and decide which ones they wish to keep. Since the player will only be playing the machine and not other players, they will be able to take their time without any pressure. Players will want to think their choices through, what cards they decide to keep will go toward the outcome of the game. The object of Jacks or Better video poker is to get a hand which is equal to, or better than a pair of jacks. The cards the player decides to keep will be marked so they can keep track of them while they decide on the others. Once the player has chosen all of the cards they would like to hold, they will select the draw button. Once the draw button has been hit, the cards which were discarded will be removed from the screen and replaced with new cards. If all goes well, the player’s cards will make a good hand which will really pay off for them!

How does the Video Poker software work?

When you play video poker at an online casino, the software uses a random number generator to choose the cards to display. This RNG is slightly different then the ones used for playing slots. The reason is that most video poker games involve only one deck. If a card is dealt, the RNG has to take this into consideration and not make this card available a second time. Jacks or Better is one of the more popular video poker games and this means players can find it at many of the online casinos which offer video poker for players to enjoy. Anyone looking to have fun online will find Jacks or Better video poker to be a great game with a lot to offer.

Video Poker Pay Schedules

One of the most important things that you must be aware of when you are playing video poker is the Pay Schedule or Pay Chart. For every video poker variation, there will be an appropriate payout when you receive a certain hand. Some of the less respectable casinos will try to lower these payouts compared to the “casino norm.”

The first pay schedule that I will go over is for “Jacks or Better” since that is what the site is named. Below is the standard paychart that you will see at most casinos.

jacks-or-better-paychart

The three places where I’ve seen some casinos cheat is with the Flush (5x instead of 6x), Full House (8x instead of 9x) and Four of a Kind (20x instead of 25x).

Back in the 1990′s, the payouts used to be more favorable. The Flush used to receive a 9x payout and the Full House used to receive a payout of 15x. However, several people wrote books on how to beat the video poker machines by going for flushes and full houses. This caused the casinos to unilaterally change the payouts to reduce this player advantage.

Other Video Poker Games

There are many video poker variations that I have seen that are very similar to Jacks or Better. The two things all of these variations below have in common is that the winning hand needs to be a pair of jacks or higher and there are no wild cards.

This means that the only difference between these games are with the pay schedule. Usually, a special hand will receive a significant bonus; of course, this means that another hand(s) will receive a reduced payout. The strategy for playing any of these games is to try to get whichever hand is receive a bonus. In addition to that, use the optimal video poker strategy the I suggest here.

Here are some of the variations that I have seen:

2 Ways Royal – The Flush is reduced to 5x payout, the Full House is reduced to 6x payout; however the Four of a Kind is raised to 40x payout.

Aces & 8′s – The Flush is reduced to 5x payout, the Full House is reduced to 7x payout; Four of a Kind of Aces or Eights receives a 80x payout, Four of a Kind of Sevens receives a 50x payout; however the other Four of a Kinds receive a 20x payout (instead of 25x).

Aces & Faces – The Flush is reduced to 5x payout, the Full House is reduced to 8x payout; Four of a Kind of Jacks, Queens or Kings will receive a 40x payout, Four Aces receive an 80x payout.

All American – Two Pairs are reduced to 1x payout, the Full House is reduced to 8x payout; Straights and Flushes are raised to 8x payouts.

Bonus Poker – Two Pairs are reduced to 1x payout, the Full House is reduced to 8x payout; Four of a Kinds are raised to 75x.

Double Bonus – Two Pairs are reduced to 1x payout; the Straight, Flush and Full House is raised by 1x payout, Four of a Kind 5′s through Kings receives 40x payout, 2s, 3s and 4s receive 80x and 4 Aces receive 160x.

Double Double Bonus – Two Pairs are reduces to 1x payout; Four of a Kind 5′s through Kings receives 45x payout, 2s, 3s and 4s receive 80x and 4 Aces receive 160x; in addition Four 2-4 of a kind with an Ace-4 receive 160x payout and Four Aces with a 2-4 receives a 350x payout.

Double Jackpot – The Flush is reduced to 5x, the Full House is reduced to 8x and Four of a Kind 2-10 are reduced to 20x; 4 Kings, Queens or Jacks has a 35x payout, with an Ace-Jack 5th card pays out 70x; 4 Aces receives a 70x payout, with a King-Jack 5th card pays out 140x.

I’m sure that there are other versions out there with a similar story to tell. Some of the payouts go up, some of the payouts go down; however, the overall payout percentage of each machine is pretty much the same.

Video Poker Games with Wild Cards

Other video poker games that include 1 to 5 wild cards will start with a higher minimum hand in order to win. One joker usually requires Kings or higher to win. Two jokers usually requires Two Pairs to win. Four wilds (like deuces or sevens) usually requires Three of a Kind to win. I’ve seen 5 wild cards; this should still be a Three of a Kind to win, but the payouts will be reduced.

Example of a Shady Casino’s Paychart

I have found a Casino, which shall remain nameless for now, that has come up with a shady tactic to fool their video poker players. Since most people play Jacks or Better, this casino has the following paychart with their Jacks or Better Video Poker game:

fraudulent-casino-paychart

What’s wrong with this? Uh, hello!? Why is the Flush worth 5x and the Full House worth 6x without there being any added benefit for the player?

If you see a paychart like this, I would stop playing at that casino altogether. If they are willing to openly cheat you in Video Poker, there’s no telling what they are willing to do to get your money.

Optimal Jacks or Better Video Poker Strategy

Jacks or Better is probably the video poker game that is most often played. Often, when someone uses the term “video poker”, they are specifically referring to the Jacks or Better game … 52 cards, no wilds and you need to receive at least a pair of Jacks in order to win on your wager.

A beginner may be confused and approach playing this game as if they were playing a normal hand of 5 card draw. There are certain things that people reach for that isn’t in your best interest when you are playing video poker. You may beat the odds once in a while, but overall there is a certain way to play the game.

Best Practices for Playing Jacks or Better

I am going to present you with different scenarios that you might face after you receive your first 5 cards. The obvious choices are to Hold or Discard any or all of the 5 cards. The following list shows you the strength of your hand from lowest to highest and tells you what decision you should make:

  1. You receive 5 cards ranked 10 or lower and no connectors:
    Discard all 5 cards
  2. This is because your chances of receive a pair of Jacks or higher is better than keeping any of the 5 cards.

  3. You receive 1 card ranked Jack or higher:
Keep the high card and Discard the other 4 cards
  4. Obviously, you will have a better chance getting a matching card in 4 tries than getting a pair of Jacks of higher in 5 cards.

  5. You receive a Suited 10-Jack, 10-Queen or 10-King:
Keep those two cards a discard the other three
  6. This will give you a small chance of drawing the Royal Flush. Otherwise, the 10′s are useless.

  7. You receive 2 Unsuited high cards (Ace, King, Queen, Jack):
Hold the 2 high cards and discard the other three
  8. You have a better chance of getting 1 of 2 face cards in 3 tries than getting 1 face card in 4 tires. If you have 3 Unsuited high cards, keep the lowest 2 cards (IE. Jack, Queen) and discard the other.

  9. You receive 2 Suited high cards:
Hold those 2 cards and discard the other 3
  10. This will give you a chance at drawing a winning pair, flush or straight.

  11. You receive 4 cards to an Inside Draw:
Hold the 4 cards and try to draw for the straight.
  12. The percentages may be low, but you have a larger upside winning the prize for a straight than discarding and trying for a pair of jacks or better.

  13. You receive a Pair of 10′s or lower:
Hold onto the pair and try for a 3 of a kind or 2 pairs
  14. The percentages are lower than discarding and receiving a pair of Jacks or higher, but not by much and the payout is worth the risk.

  15. You receive 4 cards to a Flush:
Hold the 4 cards and try to draw for the flush
  16. This is a no-brainer, unless the 5th card gives you a pair of Jacks or better.

  17. You receive 3 cards to a Royal Flush:
Hold onto the 3 cards and try to draw for the Royal Flush
  18. The prize offered for a Royal Flush will trump anything else. The only exception is if you already have a 5 card Flush.

  19. You receive a pair of Jacks or Better:
Hold onto these 2 cards and discard the other 3
  20. The only case where you should throw away a winning hand like this is when you receive a good possibility of winning a much larger prize.

  21. You receive 2 pairs:
Hold these 4 cards and try to draw for a full house
  22. Having already secured a 2 to 1 win on your bet, this is the only move you should make.

  23. You receive 4 cards to a Straight Flush:
Hold these 4 cards and try to draw for the Straight Flush
  24. Because of the potential winnings, you will even throw away a Pair of jacks or better for this chance.

  25. You receive a 3 of a kind:
Hold those 3 cards and draw for a Full House or 4 of a kind
  26. This is the only option here. You need to guarantee at least the 3 to 1 win on your bet.

  27. You receive a Pat Hand (straight, flush, full house, 4 of a kind):
    Do not discard
  28. The 4 of a kind is considered “Pat” because you can’t receive a 5 of a kind.

  29. You receive 4 cards to a Royal Flush:
    Go for the Royal Flush!
  30. The only exception here is if you already have a Straight Flush. Otherwise, the prize is worth the risk for busting up a normal flush or straight.

If you follow these rules and suggestions: you will have the best chance of winning money overall. This may not cover every single scenario; however this should cover about 99.5% of the hands that you will receive.
